description

An iridescent disc seated in a squared-off caddy, rainbow sheen across the surface. The cased one of our two disc designs.

about this piece

The eye meets a compact, squared composition: a round disc held inside a neat, angular case. Its surface shifts through an iridescent palette of violet, blue, green, pink and flashes of yellow, like a rainbow caught on polished plastic. The circular form gives the design a clear centre, while the straight edges of the case create a tidy frame around it. Lines stay clean and graphic rather than sketchy, with the disc’s smooth curve set against the sharper corners of its holder. That contrast makes the image easy to read from across a room, but the changing colour rewards a closer look. Depending on the angle, the face can appear cool and blue, then turn magenta or green as the light moves across it. It is the cased design in the two-disc series, with the enclosure adding a small piece of structure to the familiar round icon.

The artwork sits within the Y2K visual language of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when compact discs were everyday objects and digital culture was beginning to shape the look of bedrooms, desks and personal technology. One concrete marker of that period is the CD itself: a slim, reflective circle associated with music, computer files and carefully labelled collections. Y2K design often brought that practical object into a more polished, futuristic palette, using rainbow reflections, synthetic shine and simple geometric outlines to suggest a near-future made from chrome, plastic and screens. Here, the disc is not shown loose or stacked in a jewel case; it is reduced to an icon-like form, seated in a squared holder that feels part object, part interface symbol. That balance between a recognisable early-digital object and a clean graphic treatment makes it suited to a room with other small references to the era: translucent accessories, silver electronics, colourful cables, pixel motifs or a shelf of CDs. It can also stand alone as a focused nod to the period without turning the whole space into a themed display.

Place it where changing daylight or nearby room light can reach the surface, such as on a refrigerator, locker, filing cabinet or magnetic board mounted on a wall. A position near a window will bring out different parts of the rainbow sheen through the day; warmer evening light may pull forward pink and gold, while cooler light can make the blue and violet tones more apparent. Against white walls, pale grey or light wood, the colour shifts become the main point of focus. Against black, charcoal or brushed-metal surroundings, the bright disc and sharp case read more like a small piece of retro-futurist equipment. It also works beside a desk, where it can sit within a cluster of headphones, old game cases, CDs or other Y2K-inspired objects. The compact shape leaves room around it, so it does not need a crowded arrangement to feel intentional. For someone who remembers the era, it offers a familiar disc silhouette with a fresh reflective finish; for someone discovering the style now, it provides a simple, colourful sign of early digital design.
